Philly

Seing the Liberty bell was sobering. Couldn't help but feel a reverence for this whole area.

The first 2 pictures are at the Betsy Ross site, the first is her actual house.

These are pictures of Old Town Philadelphia, our first capitol city of the U.S.
Independence Hall was getting a facelift.

Christ Church, where 15 signers of the Declaration of Independence and Betsy Ross went to church here. We sat in George Washington's pew. Still being used today.

This Amish girl was so cute, she was barefooted, and driving that buggy at a pretty quick trot.

After church in the (friendly)Gettysburg ward. We drove through Lancaster County, PA, known for the Amish communities. We ate at this smorgusboard, and the food was to die for. Soooo good. We tried baked cabbage and a sweet and sour pork (not oriental but Amish recipe). We tried a little of everything, my favorite being choc/pecan pie. There was a picture we thought was cute of a little Amish girl and a butterfly. Reminded us of one Emily did of a little girl sitting with a flower. We passed at least a dozen Amish in buggies, but out of respect we didn't want to get to close or faces in the shots. We are really enjoying this trip.

Valley Forge National Historic Site is near Philladelphia. We walked the area George Washington and his army suffered a terrible winter with heavy casualty. The building was his headquarters, the log small log cabins slept 12 soldiers in 3-high bunkbeds.

Here's General Lee who was not too successful here, and led a bloody 3 day battle resulting in about 53,000 casulties counting the wounded who died later. Almost 2% of the United States population at the time, lost their lives in the Civil War.

This is where President Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address. Years later this was made a National Cemetary, and the gate we are standing by was the actual gate that once gated the White House at the time of Lincoln. Cool huh?

Today we visited with some of our new Confederate friends from Virginia. They were camped on a hill above the battlefield you see in the picture. Earlier that day one of their cannons blew a hole in the side of this building you see here. Just kidding. We hired a guide who drove with us for about 3 hours telling us about the Civil War.

Today we drove in Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Tonight we are in Gettysburg. Tomorrow we'll learn all about this Civil War site. We saw leaves changing colors. It is fall in the East already. We took an interesting road off the freeway, to see the "Y" Bridge. You start across it and half way across you can go on one road or you can take the other road.We thought it was funny. We had never seen anything like it. We saw beautiful countrysides with red roofed barns and old ready to fall apart barns. Another great day.(If you enlarge the 2'nd picture you can better see the road taking off from the middle of the bridge going north.)

The first 2 pictures are at Adam Ondi Ahmen north of Kansas City. The last is showing Joseph Smith at Liberty jail (rebuilt with some of the origional structure.) The visitors center is built right over top of it. Really interesting. We went to Council Bluffs this morning. Staying tonight between Kansas City and St.Louis, MO. We are really having a lot of fun.

This is the Winter Quarters temple in Omaha. We are having a great time.

We visited Winter Quarters, north of Omaha in Florence. The new temple there is beautiful, with a cemetary next to it where many early LDS pioneers were buried. We toured the visitors center there too.
This is a monument of the Pony Express. It only operated for 19 months. Today we were on his trail. We drove all the way from Denver to Omaha.
